My name is Megan Haines. I am an AmeriCorps Public Ally serving at the Edna Martin Christian Center on the near-eastside of Indianapolis. The Center, in my eyes, is the heart of the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood it stands in. While working at the Center I have the daily pleasure of mentoring before and after school students that attend both IPS and Charter schools in nearby neighborhoods. My goal is to equip students to excel in their academics and become both leaders and positive role models in their schools, as well as their communities. These kids have stolen my heart.
In addition to my time served at with the students of EMCC, I also assist senior citizens in the Senior Angels program. The seniors of our program take part in weekly activities such as bingo, gardening and exercise. I transport the Angels from their doorstep to ours and back home again. I am here to offer a helping hand whenever I can, in high hopes that I can somehow improve their days with something as simple as a morning conversation.
I have not only grown in my professional work ethic, but I have also grown personally in the short few months that I have been a part of the EMCC family. Having the opportunity to be a part of the team at the Edna Martin Christian Center has really given me a reason to wake up every morning and enjoy my work. I have a true passion for helping people and am forever grateful for the people that I am surrounded by daily. I am blessed to be a Public Ally and forever indebted.
