Public Allies CEO, Paul Schmitz, came to Indianapolis on February 20th for a two day visit to share one simple message with people across the city: Everyone Leads! This message is also the title of Paul’s new book Everyone Leads: Building Leadership from the Community Up. In this inspirational and innovative treatise on leadership and civic engagement, readers learn about the power of community, inclusion and collaboration. Within these pages, Schmitz writes with refreshing honesty about his development as a leader, the development of the national leadership development/capacity building organization Public Allies, and the status of our modern America.
During his time in Indianapolis, Paul was greeted with a warm reception at The CommonWeatlh Apartments, which is a truly asset-focused apartment community organized by the Englewood Community Development Corporation. A large crowd of Indianapolis neighbors listened to Paul’s story and connected together over conversation and tamales, made possible by a grant from the Wheaton Fund through Broadway United Methodist Church. Ivy Tech Community College also hosted Paul for a discussion about Everyone Leads with a large group of students, faculty and staff. In between these events, Paul met with current Public Allies, members of the Public Allies Advisory Board and enjoyed tasty Ethiopian food at Abyssinia Restaurant with a large group of Public Allies Indianapolis Alumni.
Paul Schmitz left Indianapolis leaving behind crucial questions for our communities. How will we support leaders from unlikely sources? How can Public Allies Indianapolis best collaborate with nonprofits across the city to ensure that Indianapolis organizations are inclusive, collaborative and filled with integrity? Please join Public Allies Indianapolis and INRC in reading Paul’s book and having conversations driving by these powerful questions. As Paul often says, “Leadership is about an action many can take, not a position few can hold.”
